22-year-old Uniben student raped and murdered in Benin City

A 22-year-old student, Uwaila Omozuwa was raped and killed in a church close to her home in Edo state.

According to reports, Uwaila had been studying in a “quiet” church near her home in Benin City when she was killed. Her sister, Judith Omozuwa said her sister had been raped after which she was hit with a fire extinguisher.

Her family said they received a call from a woman at the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Wednesday evening. She was taken to hospital after a security guard found her, her skirt torn and her shirt covered in blood, Judith Omozuwa said.

Uwaila died in hospital on Saturday, three days after the attack, her sister revealed.

Uwaila had only just been admitted to the University of Benin to study microbiology when she was killed and according to her sister, she usually goes to the church to read because it is quiet.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki  via twitter called on the Nigeria Police Force in the state to investigate the circumstances that led to her death.

His tweet read: “I have ordered the Nigeria Police Force ( @PoliceNG ) to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).”

The Governor stated that those found guilty will face the law.

“The @PoliceNG has been mandated to identify, arrest and prosecute anyone found culpable in her death. The Violence Against Persons (VAP) Law is in effect in our state.

“Using this law, we would ensure to investigate what exactly transpired and deal decisively with the those found complicit in the dastardly act, whoever they might be,” his tweet added.
