Maryam Sanda Sentenced To Death By Court For Killing Her Husband

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Monday 27 January has sentenced Maryam Sanda to death, she is to die by hanging.

She was found guilty  by the court for killing her husband Bilyaminu Bello, son of former National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party Mr Haliru Bello.

Justice Yusuf  Halilu  made the pronouncement while delivering judgement, she said there was compelling evidence to convict the accused. The judge, therefore, dismissed Sanda’s claim that her husband fell on a broken Shisha pot during the fight that led to his death.

Recall that the case has been on ground since 2017, the police charged Sanda for culpable homicide

According to the judge, this is a “smokescreen to deceive the court”. he stated that  Sanda intentionally stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife with intent to ”kill”.

On hearing the judgement, Sanda broke down in tears, but was comforted by her lawyer and some official of the correctional centre.

In 2017 Sanda was alleged to have killed her husband during a fight.

The charge sheet states that Sanda  stabbed her husband with broken bottles at about 3:50am on the day of the fight.

She was thereafter whisked out of the court by officials of  the correctional centre.
