Wife to former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe, notorious for her untamed outburst and high handedness especially on domestic workers has been accused of violently attacking an employee at the family’s home with a shoe in 2017, lawyers said Tuesday.
Grace Mugabe has also faced an arrest warrant in neighbouring South Africa for another assault, she used a power cable on a female model in Johannesburg in the same year.
The hot temper been displayed by Mugabe’s wife has left many domestic staff abused and humiliated beyond words, because of this ugly trend Lawyers have filed papers in Zimbabwean’s high court stating her alleged assaults on innocent workers.
One of her victims who lawyers filed papers for, Shupikai Chiroodza alleged that Mugabe used her fists and then her shoe in a prolonged attack that left Chiroodza’s face pouring blood because of the degree of injuries she inflicted on her.
Mugabe allegedly attacked Chiroodza after accusing her of “milking” her husband because she had accepted a cash wedding gift from him, the papers say.
The alleged attack took place in March 2017 when Chiroodza was a government employee working at the Mugabes’ private Blue Roof mansion in Harare eight months before then-president Mugabe was ousted from office.
“I represent Chiroodza, who was part of the domestic staff at Blue Roof in a case of unlawful dismissal,” lawyer Douglas Coltart said.
In the court papers filed, Chiroodza not only demanded her job back, she also explained how the attack took place, stating that Mrs Mugabe punched her and ordered her to return an unspecified amount of money.
“She started beating me with clenched fists shouting, ‘Who do you think you are? You are milking my husband behind my back’,” Chiroodza said in her court application.
“I was terrified. She removed her shoe and continued assaulting me with it and blood started gushing out of my forehead, mouth and nose. The assault continued for about 20 minutes.”
Chiroodza said two month after the assault, she got fired from her job.
However her Lawyer, Douglas Coltart said the civil service commission had indicated it would not contest the case. “We are hoping to get some form of settlement,”
Grace Mugabe’s ploy to be her husband’s successor in a race against Emmerson Mnangagwa, the current president, hit a brick wall.
She earned the nickname “Gucci Grace” for her lavish lifestyle, and extravangant spendings, as Zimbabwe’s economy plunged into total collapse under her husband’s authoritarian rule.
Same year In August 2017, Mrs Mugabe allegedly attacked another woman Gabrielle Engels using an electrical extension cord at an upmarket hotel in Johannesburg where the Mugabes’ two sons were staying.
Following the attack on the woman, South Africa government granted her diplomatic immunity, which allowed her to hurriedly leave the country, but a court later scrapped the ruling.
“Gucci Grace” husband Robert Mugabe is currently in Singapore for medical treatment and was expected back to Zimbabwe in mid-May,media reports.
