Outgoing President of Burundi dies of heart attack, aged 56
Outgoing President of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza, 55 have died of a heart attack.
The government of Burundi in a statement posted on Twitter on Tuesday announced “with great sorrow to Burundians and the international community” the passing of the president.
He was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, his condition improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, officials say.
After 15 years in power, Mr. Nkurunziza was due to step down in August.
Nkurunziza died at a hospital in Karuzi, eastern Burundi.
The government said there would be a period of national mourning for seven days from Tuesday and that flags would be flown at half-mast.
Mr. Nkurunziza came to power in 2005 two years after the end of a 10-year civil war which left 300,000 people dead.
