R and B singer R. Kelly didn’t show up in court for a hearing on a civil sex abuse case because he can’t read, this assertion was made by his lawyers who argued against the motion in court on his behalf.
Earlier in the year, precisely on February 21, a woman filed a lawsuit against Kelly in civil court alleging sexual abuse,at that time Kelly was in jail for failing to pay $160,000 in child support to his estranged wife Andrea lee. this is according to a spokesperson for the Cook County Sheriff’s office.
He didn’t show up at the hearing for the case on April 23 which was automatically linked to his inability to read the paper served him.this development made him loose the case as the judge entered a default judgment against him, which means he automatically lost the case.
His lawyers Zaid Abdallah and Raed Shaq confirmed R Kelly’s reading problems in court, this they said in a motion filed on April 26. they argued that it wasn’t proper,he never should have gotten the court summons in the first place because according to them R.Kelly can’t read.
“The defendant does not recall being served,” the filing said,
“The Defendant suffers from a learning disability that adversely affects his ability to read, in essence he cannot.”
The lawyers argued that they should have been served instead of Kelly who was held in prison at the time. that there was no way Kelly would have understood what was written because he can’t read.
Kelly wasn’t aware of the default judgment until the media reported about it, the filing said. but even at that,Kelly didn’t give a damn about the said judgement. according to Darrell Johnson, his publicist, Kelly doesn’t care about the lawsuit.
“We don’t care about the lawsuit,” Johnson told the Chicago Sun-Times. “The lawsuit means nothing to us.”
The lady in question who filed the law suit is also one of the four victims Cook County prosecutors identified in their criminal charges against him,so she really wasn’t a fresh victim.
R.Kelly has vehemently denied every allegation against him.
